The play takes a poignant look at the life of five unmarried sisters who endeavour to eke out a meagre existence in 1930s Ireland. The story is told through the memory of the illegitimate son of one of the sisters. The women are all unique in temperament and capability and are each other's emotional support system. The play opens at the start of the Festival of Lughnasa, a celebration of the pagan god of the harvest. Their correct Catholic upbringing comes face to face with two disturbances that crack the foundation of the family forever. The script is a masterpiece that pays tribute to the spirit and valor of close knit, working class families.
